Valentina Grizodubova was the first woman to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. She set six world records in altitude, range, and speed in a light aircraft. Grizodubova later became the commander of the 101st Long-Range Aviation Regiment, which comprised male pilots. Initially met with skepticism from her colleagues, she quickly earned their respect by demonstrating her skills as both a manager and a combat commander. After completing training at a flying club and an instructor pilot school, Grizodubova joined the Gorky Agit-Squadron in 1929. This squadron used propaganda planes to perform flights that distributed communist literature, showcased films, and organized meetings with scientists, artists, and party officials. For many people in remote areas of the country, this was the first time they had seen an aircraft, and they were particularly amazed to discover it was being piloted by a woman. Despite her numerous achievements, Grizodubova faced the threat of a military tribunal; however, these charges were ultimately dismissed.
